Don’t Judge a Bucket by Its Size

Hey Mom,

Hope your summer has gotten off to a great start… the school books are packed away and the winds of adventure and relaxation fill your sails.

Today I was asked to talk about bucket lists. Just so we’re on the same page a bucket list is a “list” of things you plan to do someday. We all have bucket lists whether we write them down or not. It might involve spitting into the Grand Canyon, standing in the shadow of the Washington Monument, or walking the same path that Martin Luther King, Jr. trod in Selma, AL.

Right now, I’m not thinking about my big bucket list… I’m too tired. We’ve been on the road for a while, covered a lot of territory, and seen a lot of amazing things… and I’m bushed. In fact, I don’t want to see any big bucket list things this summer.

BUT I do have some little bucket list things that I want to do. And they are just as important as the big bucket list things… and just as easy to talk about without ever doing.

Here’s my summer bucket list:

– Get ice cream from the ice cream truck

– Go biking at the local bike trail

– Catch craw-dads in the creek by our house

– Camp in our back yard

Wally-Dock at our local Wal-Mart with the boys

– Lead a lightning bug safari

– Make a late night pizza or ice cream run with the family

– Go putt-putting

They’re not big things, but they are eternal. AND they won’t happen unless I MAKE them happen. That’s the thing about any size bucket list, it’s not about making the list… it’s about accomplishing the list.

So Mom, if your summer bucket list involves spitting in the Grand Canyon… make it happen. If it involves wading in a creek to catch critters, make it happen. Summer won’t last forever… and your children’s childhoods won’t either.

Go have an adventure,

Todd
