We heard from one of our readers with a question about last week’s article.

It was an excellent question and we thought the answer may benefit all. Here is the question with the answer written by the original author.

Our readers, Chuck and Nancy wrote:

“Hello,
Your statement of ‘not one man who signed the D of I was born in America’ is not true. From my internet search there were only 8 who were born outside the country (England, Wales, Scotland) The rest were home grown patriots!”

This is the response written by the original author:

“Great observation! This is a ‘fun fact’ that appears on many ‘Constitutional Fun Fact’ sites and books just to get kids and people thinking about it. Here’s the reason that statement is actually true: No one who signed the Declaration of Independence was born in the United States of America. The United States didn’t exist until after the Declaration was signed! However, all but eight of the signers were born in colonies that would become the United States.”

Very best,
Monica Irvine
