Stained Glass Art

The summer sun will really illuminate this project! This is fun and affordable AND the whole family will enjoy making these. Just a little disclaimer – this is a messy project. Cover your work surfaces. Food coloring can stain so have your children dressed appropriately.

Here’s what you’re going to need:

  • Glitter glue
  • Toothpicks or paint brushes
  • Food coloring
  • Picture frames – these can be new or an old frame you’d like to recycle
  • Suction cup hangers

Here’s what you do:

  • Disassemble the frame and discard the cardboard back.
  • Clean the glass thoroughly and then place it in the frame.
  • Decide which orientation you want your glass to hang (horizontal or vertical)
  • Secure the glass in the frame.
  • Position your frame so the back (unframed edge) is facing up.

Okay, here comes the fun part!

  • Squirt glue all over the glass. There is no rhyme or reason here. Add a little, add some more.
  • Add the food coloring one drop at time to various parts of the glass. NOTE: Placing all of the colors in the same spot will result in a black puddle on your glass.
  • Use a toothpick or paint brush to blend the colors into each other and create some swirl or line designs. You can also make a picture. Allow your children to be creative.
  • Once your children are satisfied with their design, allow the project to dry at least overnight or until dry.
  • Once the stained glass is thoroughly dry, apply the suction cup to the back and stick the picture frame to your favorite sunny window.

Enjoy!
